Johann von Mansberg - Award Winning Architectural Designer and Professor
Johann von Mansberg is a Germany born architectural designer and Professor with strong cross-cultural competences. He studied architecture at Carolo Wilhelmina University in Brunswick, Germany and abroad at ETH Zurich, where he joined the studio of late Cornell Professor Werner Seligman. Johann spent a significant part of his career as design director with leading international architecture firm gmp Architects, with positions in Hamburg, Berlin and later in Beijing.
He has been teaching architectural design in parallel to his professional design work since 2008. That year, Johann was appointed one of the first lecturers at new founded AAC (Academy for Architectural Culture) in Hamburg, a private initiative providing excellent education for chosen scholars from different countries. Between 2013 and 2016, he co-headed the AAC faculty, participating in international student programs in Hanoi Vietnam, Santiago de Chile and, in collaboration with Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn. Since 2019, Johann continued his teaching in China, working in graduate as well as undergraduate programs at Tsinghua University, Beijing and Tianjin University. In 2022, he was appointed Professor for architecture at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, School of Art and Design.
During his career, Johann has won more than 20 prizes in national and international design competitions as design director, 10 of which were 1st prizes. Among numerous completed projects, private and public, he won the international competition for the extension of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, designed and completed under his own name. The building was awarded 1st prize of the BDA, German Association of Architects in 2014. In the early 2020´s, Johann contributed to high-end sustainable design, collaborating with ingenhoven architects, one of the internationally most outstanding protagonists of green building. Johann is based in Beijing and New York City.
